User Interface

The user Interface in TextConverter is designed to make the process of configuring data extraction projects as efficient, simple and convenient as possible. The main concept behind it is to provide direct access to all of the relevant components involved in the project’s configuration keeping them visually synchronized throughout the entire development cycle.

New

Closes the existing conversion project and creates a clean workspace to start a new project.  If the existing project is not saved, you will be prompted to save the project (or abandon the changes).

Load Input File

Opens a new file for extraction and transformation.

Open Project…

Opens an existing project file.

Save Project

Saves the current project to a file

Save As…

Saves the project to a new location.

View Target Log

Certain editions of the software allow you to view the target event log. The target event log can also be opened as a data source and viewed from the data browser.

Run Conversion

Runs the conversion process. . You can view the conversion results in a form of a database table after the process has finished. If no output data source is selected through the output pane, the results of your conversion are saved into a temporary database table.

Target Reports

Easily create quick summary and detailed reports out of the for the conversion.

Free Form Layout Designer

Easily create a free form layout reports for the conversion.

Replace Data Sources

Opens the ‘Replace Data Sources’ dialog where you can monitor and reset all the data sources involved in this project.

Task Scheduler

Run any TextConverter or other TARGET project through the Windows scheduler.

Recent Projects

Provides a convenient list of recently opened projects.

Recent Input Files

Provides a convenient list of recently opened input files.

Exit

Closes the TextConverter instance. Warns on exiting a not saved project.

Extract

Setup fields from the selected line

Creates positional input fields for one or more selected lines.

Make it a detailed template

Changes the selected template into a detailed template.

Move this template one level down

Moves the template one level down in the templates hierarchy. The template tab moves one position to the right. 

Flush Template

Deletes all the input fields from the current template.

Add top level template

Adds a new top-level template.

Add detailed template

Adds a new detailed template.

Delete Template

Deletes the current template.

Find

Opens the Find dialog for searching strings in the Input Preview or Script (depending on the focus).

Copy

Copies the highlighted text into clipboard in the Input Preview or Script (depending on the focus).

Undo

Discarding the last action.

Redo

Re-applying the last discarded action.

Connect

Connect input-output

Connects the input and output field(s). When connected, the default conversion procedure will transfer the input values from the input record to the output record.

Disconnect input-output

Disconnects input and output field(s). When disconnected you can still pass data from the input to the output using script conversion.

Reset Output Dictionary

Resets the output dictionary from the input dictionary.

Create Script Conversion

Creates a script customization for the selected output field(s).

Go to Script Conversion

Locates the script customization for the selected output field.

Remove Script Conversion

Removes the script customization for the selected output field(s).

Toolbar

The Toolbar is designed to give you convenient access to the most essential tools. It includes elements related to creating and saving projects, running conversions, creating summaries and reports, creating, deleting and moving templates, and other shortcuts that allow you to work more efficiently.

This will execute all checked components in the current project.  Certain error checking occurs and you may receive a warning dialog if there are unresolved issues.

Create summaries or add external references

Run Target Reports

Open a Target Reports window to easily create a report for the conversion.

Run Free Form Layout Designer

Open a Free Form Layout Designer window to easily create a free form layout for the conversion.

Target Help

Directs you to the SiMX help website.

Add a top level template

Adds a new top-level template.

Add a detailed template

Adds a new detailed template.

Reset a template, remove all fields

Clears the input dictionary removing all fields

Delete a template

Deletes the current template.

Convert a detailed template to a top level one

Converts the current detailed template to a top-level one.

Convert a top level template to a detailed one

Converts the current top-level template to a detailed one.

Move a template to the left

Moves the current top-level template one-step up in the hierarchy. The detailed templates do not change their level.

Move a template to the right

Moves the current template one-step up in the hierarchy. The detailed templates do not change their level.

Setup a template

Create a new Template by selecting one or more lines that represent data for a single record.

Add a positional field

Adds the selected data as a field.

Add a tag based field from a selected tag

Adds a tag-based field to a selected tag.

Add a tag based field from a selected field value

Turns a selected field value into a tag based field.

Split a field

Divides a field into two or more segments.

Merge fields

Combines two or more fields into one.

Delete filed

Deletes a selected field.

Assign field names

Assigns a field name from a selected line or lines

Set selected text as a field name for one of the existing fields

Sets the selected text as an existing field name.

Set selected text as a tag for one of the existing tag based fields

Sets the selected text as a tag for one of the existing tag based fields.

Set selected text as a field value for one of the existing tag based fields.

Sets the selected text as a field value for one of the existing tag based fields.

Undo

Undoes the most recent action.

Redo

Redoes the most recent action.

Garbage Can

Drag and Drop items into the Garbage Can to delete them.

 

Input File Bar

The Input File bar is located above the Input preview pane and contains the ‘Open Input File’ and the Input file preview buttons as well as the input file’s pathname. 


Dictionary Connectivity and Output Table Bar

This bar is located above the Input and Output dictionaries and contains the Input – Output dictionary connectivity buttons and the Output Table related elements.

Connect Input-Output button

Connects the selected input and output fields.

Disconnect Input-Output

Disconnects the selected input field from its output field.

Reset Output Dictionary

Re-creates the output fields from the input fields and connects them to each other.

Clear the output data source setting

Disconnect from output data source.

Select Output Destination

This button brings up a screen that allows users to name the output database or file.  Follow this link for the dialog that appears when you click this icon.

Browse the Output Database Table

This button becomes active after running the conversion. Use the Data Browser to browse the resulting data.
